Camberwell Drive update: 6 February 2026

We are grateful for residents’ continued patience as we progress our works to remediate the mine shaft at Camberwell Drive.

Site remediation

Our drilling and grouting works continue to progress well. We have stabilised the shaft and are now treating the surrounding ground to facilitate the installation of the permanent cap. We expect to continue drilling and grouting in this way until the start of March.

Removal of the platform

In early March we plan to remove the working platform. Due to the size of the platform, and to ensure residents’ safety, we will need to implement a temporary road closure like we did when we installed it. We will work with Tameside Council and public transport providers to arrange this and will provide more information in our next update. We appreciate this will be disruptive and will support individuals to minimise this as much as possible. This will include providing access to the temporary car park as required.

Once the platform has been removed, we will carry out further drilling and grouting works to complete our stabilisation works. This should take a further two weeks.

Telegraph pole

To prevent disruption to essential services during our works, Openreach installed temporary overground services using a telegraph pole. We are now working with Openreach to agree a date to move the services underground before mid-March. This may require garden access and we will work closely with affected residents to arrange this and the subsequent reinstatement of gardens.

Next phase of the works

Once we’ve removed the platform and completed the remaining drilling and grouting, we will be ready to start the next phase of works. These will consist of installing piles, capping the mine shaft and restoring the area. The works are anticipated to last around six months. We will hold a public meeting in March to provide more information about this stage of the works and will confirm the date for this in our next update.

Working hours

We will continue to work extended hours between 8am and 6pm. To minimise any disruption, we will limit any noisier work to standard office hours.
