Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Has the WAMM Programme built one of these systems before?

Similar systems have been built by the WAMM Programme at Force Crag in the Lake District National Park (operating since 2014) and Nent Haggs near Alston (operating since 2024).

There is no coal here, so why is the Mining Remediation Authority involved?

The Mining Remediation Authority works in partnership with the Environment Agency and DEFRA on the Water and Abandoned Metal Mines Programme.

The Mining Remediation Authority has built more than 80 mine water treatment systems across the UK, mostly for coal mine water treatment. This means they have the engineering skills and experience necessary to design, operate and maintain metal mine water treatment systems. A full list of the Mining Remediation Authority’s treatment schemes can be found here.
