The Mining Remediation Authority (MRA) is a non-departmental public body and partner organisation of the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ). Formerly known as the Coal Authority, we have over 30 years of experience managing the legacy impacts of coal mining across the UK. Our mission is to create a safer, cleaner environment for communities in former mining areas.
The coal programme focuses on mitigating environmental risks associated with historic coal mining. This includes:
We operate more than 80 mine water treatment schemes nationwide, treating approximately 232 billion litres of mine water to prevent pollution of drinking water from aquifers as well as protecting more than 400km of rivers and removing over 4,000 tonnes of iron solids.
Boreholes are essential for monitoring rising mine water levels and chemistry. Our framework approach ensures timely interventions to prevent pollution and flooding risks. Boreholes target deep underground workings, assess water systems, and support sustainable management strategies.
We use both passive and active treatment systems. Passive systems often involve natural processes with low energy usage whilst utilising settlement ponds and reed beds for habitat development. Meanwhile, active systems may include High Density Sludge (HDS) technology for complex water chemistry but situated in a smaller parcel of land.
Our work goes beyond environmental protection – it helps transform former coalfield areas into vibrant, sustainable spaces that improve quality of life. By restoring land and water, we create access to green spaces where people can walk, relax, and connect with nature. These sites provide habitats for diverse ecosystems, support tree planting initiatives, and enhance biodiversity. Refurbishment works within our treatment scheme sites maintain not only the habitats established but also the effectiveness of mine water treatment in these passive systems.
As part of building and maintaining these schemes, we deliver social value through partnerships with schools, local charities, and community projects. We prioritise local businesses in our supply chain where possible and create opportunities that strengthen the local economy. Every project is designed not only to protect the environment but to enrich communities and foster wellbeing for generations to come.
