Learning and development has been a cornerstone of our organisation’s commitment to ‘grow our own’ and ensure our all our colleagues are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in their roles.
Ben’s story – Geospatial Engineer
Ben joined the Mining Remediation Authority in June 2021 and led on the technical development of an impact-driven digital transformation project: the refresh of our online map viewer.
This viewer provides the public, planners, and developers with easy access to fundamental mining data, including historical coal mining activity, mine entries – and through mine water heat zones – low carbon heating opportunities, aligning with the UK’s net-zero and sustainability goals.
Thanks to Ben’s leadership and technical capabilities, the viewer was brought in-house, allowing for faster, more efficient upgrades, creating better value for money and minimising costs to the taxpayer.
The refreshed version launched in summer 2024 and is one of our key projects delivering on our commitment to making our data FAIR – Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. It also reflects our mission to support growth and informed decision-making across the coalfields of Great Britain.
We’re proud to invest in Ben’s professional development and technical skills to enable this exciting project to be delivered.
All our colleagues complete a minimum of 5 days of learning and development annually, with our People and Organisational Development team arranging access to a wide range of technical training alongside professional and personal development opportunities. This ensures our people continue to grow their expertise and deliver innovative, efficient customer-focused solutions.
