Where are we proposing to treat the mine water?

We have identified a preferred site following a lengthy assessment process where many sites were considered.

Our preferred site has been chosen because of its:

  • Distance from the mine water adit (the mine’s drainage tunnel)
  • Size
  • Topography
  • Engineering factors
  • Ecological surveys

Although we have a preferred site, we are continuing to carry out investigations to confirm this location is suitable. We will not be able to build a mine water scheme until we have obtained planning permission from Durham County Council along with other environmental permits.

Our preferred site is shown on the map below and is to the southeast of the Sharnberry mine adit just inside Hamsterley Forest.
